BIFA Announces Major Update to Standard Trading Conditions
Ongoing changes in UK trading procedures, combined with increasing turbulence in global markets, have led the British International Freight Association (BIFA) to release a new edition of its Standard Trading Conditions.
This revised framework, due to replace the 2021 version next year, addresses the growing complexity of international trade and the heightened risks in international logistics.
Most UK freight forwarders, including Killick Martin, operate under BIFA’s trading conditions. As such, the new version will have a significant impact on contractual practices across the industry.
BIFA’s director general, Steve Parker, underlined the importance of keeping trading terms aligned with wider developments, commenting: “Over time, in the same ways laws must change, so do contractual rights and obligations that flow from these changes. Therefore, it is essential to review any set of industry terms against changes in legislation and industry practice.”
He explained that what began as a routine review evolved into a more extensive project than originally anticipated, resulting in a substantial revision and expansion. The updated conditions are intended to deliver greater clarity, stronger protection, and closer alignment with today’s trading environment.
The new BIFA trading conditions will also become our new trading conditions. They can be viewed on the BIFA website HERE but will not come into effect until after 31st December 2025.
