Ceasefire in Place, But Fuel Surcharges May Be Looming

Tensions between Iran and Israel remain high despite a fragile ceasefire, raising concerns that fuel surcharges could soon affect all forms of transportation.

The ongoing conflict has already significantly impacted oil prices. Initially, prices surged when hostilities broke out, but they began to decline after the ceasefire was announced. However, experts caution that the situation is still volatile, and any resumption of fighting could lead to another spike in oil prices, potentially driving up transportation costs globally.

Before the ceasefire took effect and oil prices started to drop, some UK haulage companies had already warned of imminent fuel surcharges, as fuel costs rose by as much as 10% at one point this week.

A major concern for the logistics industry is the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for 20% of the world’s oil shipments. Should hostilities resume and the Strait be blocked, it could cause significant disruption to the global oil market, resulting in higher fuel prices for ocean, air, and road freight movements.

With the fragile ceasefire in place, businesses around the world are most likely monitoring the situation. Any flare-up in tensions could lead to higher oil prices, posing a challenge to the global supply chain.

As always, the team at Killick Martin will continue to provide updates on any major developments in this ongoing situation.
