Congestion Impacting Ports In Asia

May 28, 2024

Ports in Asia are now suffering from heavy port congestion, which is disrupting ocean freight schedules throughout Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Singapore is amongst the most impacted right now, which is believed to be at critical levels. Berthing delays of up to a week have become commonplace, which has led several carriers to omit calling at the Southeast Asian port.

It is not just Southeast Asia that is suffering from the congestion, Shanghai and Qingdao have been witnessing a build up of ships waiting to berth, incurring their highest levels of congestion since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The diverted routes around the Cape Of Good Hope, due to the Red Sea crisis, are largely being blamed for the issues in Asia ports, which has disrupted schedules and led to vessel bunching.

Combined with the lack of space and equipment shortage already reported, the congestion is adding another layer of complexity to securing booking availability, as rates continue to move upwards.

The team at Killick Martin are working hard to manage the situation and once more remind customers to provide as much notice as possible ahead of bookings.
