Containership Collision Leads To Captain’s Arrest
A container ship’s captain has now been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter after the rescue search for a missing crew member was unsuccessful.
The containership ‘Solong’ crashed into the oil tanker ‘Stena Immaculate’ on Monday off of the UK’s East Yorkshire coast, with one member of crew now presumed dead.
The tanker, which was carrying 220,000 barrels of jet fuel in 16 cargo tanks, was anchored in the North Sea when it was struck by the Solong off the coast of Hull, causing a series of explosions on board and releasing jet fuel into the sea.
Smoke can still be seen rising from the containership, but the fire aboard the oil tanker has been put out.
36 crew members from Russia, America and the Philippines have been safely taken to shore. The containership is damaged beyond repair and is expected to sink in the North Sea.
