European Port Disruptions Persist Despite Temporary Strike Relief
Strikes at two key Northern European ports have eased for now, though the risk of renewed walkouts remains.
Industrial action in Antwerp and Rotterdam has disrupted operations, adding pressure to already fragile supply chains and worsening the congestion that has plagued European shipping throughout the year.
In Antwerp, marine pilots have postponed their work-to-rule campaign until 24th October, which had restricted operations to between 08:00 and 17:00. As all vessels require mandatory pilotage, the measures had caused lengthy delays for ships entering the port.
Operations were further affected by a nationwide strike over pension reforms, which halted activity earlier this week.
Meanwhile, in Rotterdam, dockworkers launched a strike on October 8th over pay and working conditions. Although a court order compelled them to return to work on October 13th, the strike could legally resume tomorrow if no deal is reached.
As two of Europe’s busiest and most congested ports, disruptions in Antwerp and Rotterdam have already led to backlogs and delays, with further ripple effects likely across global shipping schedules.
