Fireball Erupts as Cargo Plane Crashes At Louisville Airport
A cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport yesterday, killing at least seven people and igniting fires throughout a nearby industrial area.
The MD-11F wide-body freighter caught fire moments after departing around 5:15 p.m. local time (10:15 p.m. GMT). Witnesses said the aircraft veered sharply before crashing beyond the runway, triggering explosions and setting multiple buildings ablaze as thick black smoke rose into the evening sky.
Emergency responders arrived quickly but faced intense flames and widespread wreckage. Authorities confirmed at least seven fatalities, including all three crew members on board the UPS aircraft. Officials warned that the death toll may rise as recovery efforts continue.
The crash forced a temporary shutdown of Muhammad Ali International Airport, a major logistics hub that houses UPS Worldport — the company’s largest global air cargo facility. All flight operations have been suspended while investigators and cleanup crews work to clear debris strewn across two runways.
This marks the second major cargo aircraft accident in just two weeks. On October 20th, an Emirates freighter skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport.
Killick Martin continues to closely monitor developments. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragic event.
