Ocean Freight Rates Set To Rise Across Asia Trade Routes
Several ocean freight carriers have announced notable rate increases ahead of the traditional Asia peak season, with revised pricing expected to come into effect from 1st June.
The extent of these increases varies by carrier, origin, and destination, and is being introduced through General Rate Increases (GRIs) and/or Peak Season Surcharges (PSS). While the market has previously seen some proposed GRIs reduced or withdrawn before implementation, current conditions may give shipping lines a stronger opportunity to successfully apply these latest increases.
Ocean carriers within the major alliances have also taken a more assertive approach to capacity management in recent months. A significant number of blank sailings have been announced in recent weeks, reducing available space and contributing to firmer market conditions.
Industry reports further suggest that demand on the Asia–Europe trade lane has strengthened over the past two weeks, with some carriers indicating this could mark the start of an early peak season. Similar patterns are also being seen on Asia–North America routes, where the transpacific market is showing signs of improving demand.
As a result, we recommend customers remain prepared for potential freight rate increases during June and possibly beyond. Killick Martin will continue to monitor market developments closely.
