Port workers in India are set to go on strike indefinity across the nation from August 28th, demanding immediate resolution of their pay, allowance and pension demands.
The decision came after a two-day meeting held at V.O.C. Port in Thoothukudi last week, when the National Coordination Committee of Port Workers announced the industrial action after prolonged negotiations with the Ministry of Shipping.
The previous deal expired three years ago and no agreement has been reached since, with unions heavily criticising the Ministry’s “illogical and illegal guidelines” for stalling negotiations.
India has already been seen a fair amount of ocean freight disruption in recent times. However, unless a settlement can be found ahead of the planned strike date, disruption from the country is likely to get significantly worse.
