US East Coast Snow Storm Grounds Over 5,000 Flights
A record-breaking snowstorm brought much of the US East Coast to a halt yesterday, leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights and widespread disruption to airfreight operations.
Major airports serving New York City, Boston and Philadelphia were among the hardest hit, as severe weather grounded aircraft and brought cargo movements across the region to a standstill.
More than 5,000 US departures were cancelled, and nearly a quarter of inbound international flights were also scrapped. This included hundreds of services from UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester, leaving both air cargo and passengers facing significant delays.
Additional cancellations are expected through Tuesday and possibly beyond, with airports in Boston and New York likely to remain especially vulnerable.
Some areas of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have seen around three feet of snow, while up to two feet has fallen in parts of New Jersey and Long Island. Authorities in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts have issued bans on non-essential travel in response to the hazardous conditions.
In addition to the clear impact on air freight, the disruption is set to affect domestic transport services across the North East, including collections and deliveries for both air and ocean freight.
